Research and Conservation

By connecting organizations and partners and supporting member-led work, we help create space for meaningful conservation efforts alongside responsible marine tourism.

Member-Led Research and Conservation

Many NIMMSA members actively lead or contribute to research, monitoring, and conservation initiatives in the region.

These member-led efforts range from long-term population studies and acoustic monitoring to education, outreach, and field-based stewardship work that deepens understanding of marine mammals and their habitat.

A Fund to Support Marine Conservation on Northern Vancouver Island

The Conservation Fund helps support on-the-ground projects related to marine research, education, and stewardship. Funding comes from NIMMSA members and donors and is directed to projects that reflect shared values and priorities in the region.

      Education and Knowledge Sharing

Research and conservation efforts are most effective when knowledge is accessible and shared.

NIMMSA helps bridge research and practice by supporting education, learning opportunities, and knowledge-sharing initiatives that inform operators, partners, and the broader community about marine mammals, regulations, and best practices.

        Respecting the Territories

NIMMSA operates within the traditional territories of many First Nations along the North Island coast. These waters are not only ecologically rich, they are deeply connected to culture, history, and ongoing stewardship.

We encourage all members and visitors to take a moment to learn about respectful travel within these territories.

This short video, Maya’xala by Nanwakolas Council, shares guidance rooted in Indigenous knowledge and values, offering an important perspective on how we show up with care and respect.
